138th Running of the Kentucky Derby

Who knew that a two minute race could be surrounded by months and months of events and planning? The Kentucky Derby is not only a horse race but an entire season here in Louisville. The city thrives on it’s excitement and tradition. People travel from all over the country to take part in the exhilaration of the Kentucky Derby. This past weekend, Churchill Downs held the 138th “Run for the Roses”! The two minute race along with the pre/post parties and events take an extremely large amount of time and effort to pull off. For the event industry and everyone else involved, Derby is a labor of love. It’s so much more than horses, big hats and mint juleps, it’s an experience. Although this time of year is alot of work, it is with much pride and honor that we were able to be a part of it. This is a little taste of what we created this year!

Joanna and Eric had a beautiful fall wedding at the Sawyer Hayes Community Center, part of E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville. This celebration took place on a crisp autumn day in October. The event was complete with delicious catering from Ladyfingers Catering, gorgeous flowers from Blooms and sweet treats from the Homemade Pie and Ice Cream Kitchen. Enjoy!

DMC stands for “destination management company” and refers to a company that offers the following services:

A DMC provides service to out of town clients who need assistance in a specific city or destination. The DMC is hired because they have extensive knowledge about the city/destination. Ask the Experts: Where do I begin when planning my wedding?

As most of you have probably found, there is ALOT to do when planning your wedding. First off, congratulations on being engaged! This should be a wonderful time in your life, not only planning your dream day but also connecting on a deeper level with your fiancée. Take time to enjoy being engaged and celebrate your relationship with family and friends. You may choose to announce your engagement in a local newspaper or have an engagement party. After the excitement has worn a bit and your lives have calmed down begin thinking about your wedding day. This is the day your life will change forever!

First you need to discuss your wedding together and come up with a vision and date or time of year. Keep the date flexible as it may need to change depending on venue availability. Your vision should include deciding on a budget, how many guests you want to invite, if you want to hire a wedding planner, if you want the style formal or casual and a possible theme or colors you want to incorporate. After agreeing on what type of wedding you want, it’s time to put the plan into action!

After you have created your vision you need to begin looking for a ceremony and reception location. The date you have chosen may change depending on what venue is available and how much the location means to you. Once you find a ceremony and reception venue that you like, BOOK IT! Don’t procrastinate or you may miss out on a great location. After the venue(s) are booked, the date it set! Congratulations! This is the date that will remain forever in your memory, the day you married your soul mate.

After the date is set, here is a list of tasks to complete within the first couple of months:

Discuss with both families financial responsibilities
Collect ideas and inspiration
Create a working guest list
Choose your wedding party
Select and book ceremony officiant
Select and book caterer
Select and book photographer
Choose and order your wedding gown
If you are hiring a band, select and book band

Choosing all of your vendors early is important but there are a couple of vendors whose calendars fill up more quickly than others. These include wedding planner or coordinator, photographer, band and officiant. These types of vendors normally only accept one wedding per day or weekend so their calendars aren’t as flexible as others such as DJ service, florist and bakery.

Now that these tasks have been completed you are off to a good start. Don’t let planning your wedding get overwhelming. Remember that this day is about you and your fiancée and making a vow of love. We want to leave you with a blissful photo of one of our past couples. Happy Planning!

Essential Details was honored to be a part of the retirement reception for Bill Summers, chief administrative officer for Mayor Greg Fischer. Mr. Summers gave decades of service to Louisville’s City Government including 21 years as a deputy mayor for Jerry Abramson and 3 years as director of the city sanitation department.

For the reception Essential Details provided decor including custom artwork from our own, Casey McKinney. The piece was stunning! Great job Casey!
