The Essential Details of Creating Your Bridal Beauty Vision

Hi, my name is Pamela Butler and I’m a professional makeup artist & owner of The Beauty Patrol. We are a large team of makeup and hair stylists who specialize in events. We work closely with our clients to achieve their best makeup and hair for the wedding day. The following tips are a combination of my experience and my colleagues to prepare you when meeting your makeup artist and hairstylist.

To help you choose a style that resonates with the rest of your aesthetic, it’s best to know what your overall feel will be at the wedding. Makeup and hair should be cohesive with the attire, the venue, the florals, etc. Keeping the styles in sync will work great for your photos.

My favorite way to understand your style is to see photos of my actual clients when they felt good about their image. Style is very personal. I can use your Pinterest/IG photo for inspiration but to be very honest most of those featured photos are highly edited, with perfect models who are chosen for their flawless skin, hair, and facial features. Most of our clients are not models and most clients have unique challenges with skin/hair. Building a realistic look with your artist is the first step to being the best you can be in person not just in photos. Many makeup and hair stylists are frustrated with the highly filtered images clients bring to their appointments. We love clients who set up their appointments for success by having a clear vision, a budget to achieve their goals, and the dedication to using premium products for optimum results.

For makeup: skincare is a must to achieve flawless makeup. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Facials, brow grooming, and med spa appointments aren’t just for celebrities. Hydration, health, and nutrition all contribute to skin health.

Natural

Natural and natural glam are not the same. Natural makeup looks like no makeup with lightly enhanced lash/ lip and cheeks. See below for reference. She has on makeup but it’s organic with no hard lines. Her hair has an effortless look yet she still looks polished. This style is very “royal” family.

Natural Glam

Natural Glam is natural colors but it is a FULL face of makeup. This is our most requested style for bridal. Hair for this makeup can be up or down. It’s extremely versatile style that works for most clients. I call this look “Blake” as in Lively.

Classic

Classic makeup is typically more lip/ soft eyeliner with some shading and usually paired with an updo or a sleek down style. This is perfect for a black-tie event and if you love a timeless style this works well for many people. Updos are great for hair that doesn’t hold curl, fine thin hair and it keeps you cool.

Edgy, Quirky and Unique!

If this is you all the time then stick with that for your wedding day. This style is actually a personal favorite created by our stylist Jessica with The Beauty Patrol. Notice her makeup is soft. It’s the balance and nod to “different” that makes this oh-so-perfect.

These are just a few styles that we can do for you. The key is finding the style that makes you feel confident and one that works with your uniqueness.

Your makeup and hair appointment is a collaborative effort and communication is the utmost importance. We want you to tell us what you want! Most artists will ask for feedback throughout the process and this is your time to speak up.

Most artists feel it’s best to collaborate without the influence of others unless they are there to be your hype person. Bringing a guest to your appointment who doesn’t share your vision can be incredibly frustrating for your team and you. We are the expert not your Aunt Snooky who did perms in 1980. The decision of your makeup and hair style should be what you feel is best not your friends, parents or even your fiancé. It’s not the best experience when the bride is heavily influenced by someone else’s opinion.

Arrive to your hair appointment with clean dry hair. Bring any accessories you are wearing on the wedding day. Choose inspiration that works for your hair color, length and type. If you are choosing styles with very full volume, talk with your stylist about hair extensions.

I love mature clients! “Make me look 20 years younger” is a frequent comment I hear and sometimes as a joke (sometimes not). If I could erase fine lines or even deep wrinkles I would but that isn’t how makeup works. What we can do is introduce makeup techniques that will not emphasize any imperfections. All women should feel beautiful at any age!

In conclusion, when choosing a makeup artist or hairstylist for your wedding look for someone who has a portfolio that includes your desired results, positive reviews/reputation and the experience to make your day spectacular.
